Info about the artist and the work:

Belgian artist D.D. Trans (b. 1963) is known for his witty reinterpretations of everyday objects, blending minimalism with a playful, surreal edge. By subtly transforming common items, often sourced from hardware stores or bazaars, he strips them of their function and invites us to reconsider their hidden poetry, absurdity, or beauty.

His work is part of major collections, including Museum Voorlinden (NL), M HKA (Antwerp), and Collezione La Gaia (Italy).

For the Gordon Square Society, he has created an exclusive multiple in a limited edition of 10 + 1 A.P.: Printer’s Block. A small black brush, bent at a right angle, loses all practical use and becomes an autonomous artwork. The title evokes not only the traditional “printer’s blocks” used in hand-printing, it also suggests a blockage, a tool that no longer works. This playful ambiguity mirrors the piece itself, caught between craft and art, function and form.

Thus, the work resonates perfectly with this year’s main theme of the Virginia Woolf & Bloomsbury Festival 2025 about Art & Craft and the exhibition Letter by Letter. (By the Woolf’s’ Hands). Handprinted Books by Virginia and Leonard Woolf. Like the handmade editions of the Hogarth Press, Printer’s Block reflects on the power of the crafted object and its transformation into art.
